Body of boy who drowned in Kota Tinggi drain found

The body of a nine-year-old boy who fell into a drain in Kota Jaya, Kota Tinggi in Johor on Monday has been found.

Kota Tinggi police chief Yusof Othman said the boy’s body was found around 10.20am today by a search and rescue team, Sinar Harian reported.

“The body, fully clothed, was found floating in the river by the team that was cruising along Sungai Johor in a boat, searching for the victim,” he was quoted as saying.

He also said the body had been sent to the forensics department of Kota Tinggi Hospital for a post-mortem after the boy’s family confirmed it was him.

The case has been classified as sudden death, Yusof added.

On Monday, Bernama reported that the boy was feared to have drowned after falling into the drain while trying to retrieve his slippers.

Yusof had then said that the incident occurred at 3pm when there was heavy rain and strong currents.

The search and rescue operations involved 44 personnel from the Kota Tinggi police headquarters, the fire and rescue department, the Civil Defence Force, the water rescue unit, as well as the K9 unit.

The department of irrigation and drainage, People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela), social welfare department, as well as the Kampung Kelantan village development and security committee were also involved in the search operation.
