PETALING JAYA:
The Indonesian embassy in Kuala Lumpur is overseeing the repatriation of an Indonesian who succumbed to his injuries after he was fatally shot by Malaysian maritime officers last Friday.

Four other Indonesians were also injured in the 3am incident involving the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in the waters off Tanjung Rhu, Selangor, reported Bernama.

The body of the Indonesian national, identified by the initial “B”, will be flown from Kuala Lumpur to Pekanbaru depending on flight availability.

The man’s body will then be transported by land to his hometown on Rupat island.

Citing a statement from the Indonesian foreign ministry, Bernama reported that the Indonesian embassy in Kuala Lumpur was still gathering information to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.

It has also retained a lawyer to review potential legal action.

The embassy was yesterday granted consular access to visit the four injured Indonesians, who are receiving medical treatment at hospitals in Serdang and Klang.

Two of them, identified by the initials “HA” and “MZ’”, both from Riau province, are in stable condition.

“They explained the chronology of the incident and said there was no resistance with sharp weapons from the Indonesian passengers against the MMEA patrol team,” the ministry said.

The other two victims remain in critical condition following surgery and have not yet been able to provide statements.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, with the MMEA personnel involved in the shooting relieved of their duties pending an inquiry.

Last Saturday, Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said MMEA members fired several shots in self-defence when two suspects from a boat, armed with parangs, attacked them on Friday morning.

Separately, Selangor Maritime director Abdul Muhaimin Salleh said MMEA received information about a fibre boat stranded about 0.4 nautical miles southwest of Carey Island.

“Two men suspected to be Indonesians were found in the boat. One person was confirmed dead at the scene, while the other was injured and sent to Klang Hospital for treatment,” he said.
