PETALING JAYA:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has instructed the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) to fine-tune the coordination between state and federal agencies in helping flood victims.

In a Facebook post, Anwar said the main priority was the welfare of the victims as well as the safety of residents in affected areas.

“The state education departments have also been ordered to take appropriate measures to ensure SPM candidates affected by the floods will be able to sit for the examination in a safe and conducive environment,” he said, adding that he was saddened by the worsening floods in Sabah and Sarawak.

Separately, deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said all federal and state disaster relief assets had been mobilised to 13 locations in Sarawak hit by floods.

Zahid, who is also Nadma chairman, said more than 50 relief centres had been activated to house flood victims in the state.

He said Nadma would coordinate with relevant parties, including the education ministry, to identify more schools and community halls that could be used as relief centres.

The agency would also look into the need for the construction of Bailey bridges in areas where transport links had been affected, he said.

As of 3pm, the number of flood victims in the two states has risen to over 8,500.
