PETALING JAYA:
The firearms and hundreds of bullets seized at sea by police in Penang are believed to have been intended to be sold to several gangs in the state.

Berita Harian reported Penang police chief Hamzah Ahmad as saying that a large network was involved in the smuggling of the firearms and bullets.

Police have so far seized five pistols, a M4 rifle and 801 bullets.

Hamzah said police had identified parts of this network, including those based in neighbouring countries.

He said based on preliminary investigations, it involved gangs in Penang.

He, however, declined to disclose more details as investigations were ongoing.

So far, the police have arrested four suspects, including two Indonesians aged 22 and 57. They are under remand until Feb 3.

The four were arrested on Monday after marine police intercepted two fibreglass boats which had no registration numbers in the waters off Perai.

Police seized two Sig Sauer pistols, two Glock pistols, a Smith and Wesson pistol, a M4 rifle, 600 rounds of M4 ammunition, 200 rounds of 9mm ammunition and one S&B bullet.

The four men had posed as fishermen but are believed to be part of an international arms smuggling syndicate.
