PETALING JAYA:
Kota Laksamana assemblyman Low Chee Leong has sought to clarify his proposal to boost Jalan Hang Tuah’s local economy, saying he did not suggest renaming the street as “Jonker Walk 2.0”.

The DAP man said he was merely suggesting that Melaka develop the street into a new business district by adopting the Jonker Walk concept, without renaming it or closing the road at night.

Low asserted that Jonker Walk’s success as a tourist and economic hub for small businesses could be replicated in Jalan Hang Tuah, Bernama reported.

“Right now, Jalan Hang Tuah only comes alive during the day. At night, the area becomes quiet as many business premises are closed.

“Therefore, one way to revitalise Jalan Hang Tuah is through business activities like Jonker Walk, by adopting the night market concept, not renaming or closing the road,” he said.

Low said he only proposed that new business sites be set up at night along the street’s walkway, not in the middle of the road, with the street still open to vehicles.

Low, who is also deputy executive councillor for rural development, agriculture and food security, said the proposal would be discussed further at the Kampung Morten village committee level before being brought to the state government level.

Melaka opposition leader Dr Yadzil Yaakub had slammed the DAP man’s proposal earlier this week, saying Jalan Hang Tuah had rich historical significance and was already a prime tourist attraction that did not need to be rebranded.

Separately, state executive councillor Dr Akmal Saleh said Jalan Hang Tuah was better off being developed with a focus on Malay culture.

The Umno Youth chief pointed out that Melaka already had Little India at Jalan Bendahara and Chinatown in Jonker Walk.

“What’s more important is that traders and the rakyat get to enjoy the state’s economic development.”
