Nik Azhar Daud, who suffered injuries on the back of his head, neck, legs and right arm, is being treated at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital, Kuala Terengganu, Berita Harian reported.
Dungun police chief Maizura Abdul Kadir confirmed receiving a report regarding the incident.
Nik Azhar had told his wife that he was going to check on the buffaloes in their plantation, to make sure they did not traverse onto the nearby East Coast Expressway 2.
“My husband said he was sitting down to rest when suddenly a black bear attacked him from behind and bit him on his neck,” his wife, Rashuhaida Mokhtar, was quoted as saying.
While trying to fight off the bear, the victim took his knife and stabbed it several times, causing the animal to retreat.
Nik Azhar’s brother, Nik Roslan Daud, 55, said he had received a call from the victim informing him of the bear attack and asking for help.
“My brother was very weak having lost a lot of blood, so I kept asking him to pray while waiting for the ambulance to arrive,” he said.
Nik Roslan added that residents nearby had encountered bears on several occasions though the animals usually fled into the forest upon seeing them.
