PETALING JAYA:
The shooting of five Indonesian migrant workers by Malaysian maritime officers last week will be investigated transparently, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim assured today.

Anwar said he has ordered a preliminary investigation report on the incident to be submitted to Indonesia through its embassy here, Sinar Harian reported.

“When the full investigations are complete, (the report) will be studied by our friends in Indonesia, too.

“I want to assure and emphasise that the investigation must be transparent,” he said, adding that he did not want the issue to affect the good ties between both countries.

He added that enforcement authorities must lawfully deal with the illegal entry of migrants and smuggling activities in the country’s waters.

“They cannot break the law (in acting against offenders),” he said.

One Indonesian was killed and four others injured when they were shot by Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency officers in the waters off Tanjung Rhu, Banting, Selangor.

There were conflicting reports on the incident, with Malaysian authorities claiming the five migrants tried to resist arrest and Jakarta disputing this.

The shooting caused an outcry in Indonesia, with nearly 100 demonstrators from various rights groups and labour unions throwing eggs at the Malaysian embassy in Jakarta yesterday.

However, Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto expressed confidence that Malaysian authorities would thoroughly probe the incident.
