HANOI:
National shooter Alia Sazana Azahari was clearly disappointed as her aim for a hattrick of gold medals fell short by a single point in the women’s 25m sports pistol event at the 31st SEA Games today.

And it was Singaporean Teh Xiu Hong, the shooter Alia Sazana had defeated in 2015 and 2017, who denied her a third consecutive gold medal.

The women’s 25m sports pistol event was not held in the Philippines in 2019.

Xiu Hong earned 34 points, Alia Sazana had 33 points and Tanyaporn Prucksakorn of Thailand took bronze with 28 points.

“I’m angry and I know it was due to my mistake. Anyway, there were two shoot-offs before that, resulting in an extended competition time,” the 33-year-old Alia Sazana said.

“Anyway, I’m happy with the result, especially after going through difficult times during the Covid-19 pandemic and this is only my second international outing since the outbreak,” added the Terengganu-born athlete.

Two other Malaysian shooters – Bibiana Ng and Siti Nur Masitah Badrin – crashed out in the qualifying round.

Alia Sazana’s silver medal is the national squad’s second. On Monday, Hafizh Adzha won the first in men’s 25m rapid fire pistol.

Meanwhile, the national quartet of Haritz Iklil Hessly Hafiz, Ezuan Nasir Khan, Nur Suryani Taibi and Sharifah Noor Ellyna Syed Abdul Hamid were eliminated in the mixed team 10m air rifle qualifying round.

The national shooters are aiming for one gold and four bronze medals this year.
