KUCHING:
Selangor’s Nur Afrina Batrisyia Rizal completed a sprint double to consolidate her status as the Sukma sprint queen by blitzing to victory in the 200m final in a new Games record at the Sarawak Stadium today.

Still basking from her 100m sprint gold triumph – also in record time – yesterday, the 20-year-old was in her element again as she romped home in 23.89s to erase the old Games mark of 24.27s set by Perak’s Noor Eewan Syafiah Sabri at the 2016 edition here.

Terengganu’s Izzatul Musfirah Kamal Azira took silver in 24.52s while Sarawak’s Ormilla Octavia Codday Nyadau came in third in 24.94s for bronze.

“I got the gold medal for Selangor just like I wanted, and I also broke another Games record … I am so happy. I never expected to clock such a fast time.

“I just stayed focused before the race. I kept calm and didn’t even think about my rivals because this was a race against myself. This success is all because of the support of my coaches and family,” she said.

Meanwhile, men’s 100m gold medallist Danish Iftikhar Roslee came agonisingly close to emulating Nur Afrina’s sprint double achievement in the 200m final.

The Johor runner made a late dash to try and catch race leader Sayyid Amin Roslan but unfortunately left it too late and the Penang sprinter pipped him to the tape by mere centimetres.

Sayyid Amin took gold in 21.221s while Danish clocked a time of 21.225s.

Sabah’s Pengiran Aidil Auf Hajam settled for bronze in 21.60s.

“I’m pleased with my achievement today, although it’s not what I envisaged. Still, it’s all good. Not everything we planned went smoothly but, Alhamdulillah, Allah had planned something good for me, so (I will) enjoy what he has blessed me with,” said the 17-year-old Danish.

Meanwhile, Terengganu’s Armin Zahryl Abdul Latif and Selangor’s Lie Yee Teng proved their mettle when they clinched the men’s 110m and women’s 100m hurdles gold medals in style.

Armin clocked 14.26s to take home the gold while Fiross Faizal of Federal Territories (FT) took silver in 14.51s.

Johor’s Hazriq Cik Mat Kilau settled for bronze in 14.57s.

In the women’s final, Yee Teng clocked 14.28s to leave her rivals trailing, with Johor’s Nur Shaqirah Cik Mat Kilau (14.87s) in second place and Perak’s Farah Syakira Azifsafrin (14.97s) in third.
