PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has blocked access to a website called Medium after its administrators failed to remove an article they posted by Sarawak Report concerning Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Medium is a publishing platform launched by the founder of Twitter that offers amateurs and professionals the chance to have their articles published.

According to an article on Engadget website that reported on the block, MCMC had written to Medium requesting the removal of the article entitled “Najib negotiates his exit but wants safe passage and all the money”, which it claimed was “false, unsubstantiated, misleading, and in violation of Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.”

MCMC also said that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had likewise complained about the article, saying allegations that the anti-graft body had recommended 37 separate charges against Najib in the SRC International case, was “untrue.”

However the move to block access to Medium was made after the site’s administrators responded by asking MCMC for evidence that Malaysian law had been broken and that they be furnished a copy of the MACC’s statement refuting the allegations.

Engadget reported that “Medium ‘stands by investigative journalists’, and won’t remove any posts until it receives an order from ‘a court of competent jurisdiction’ to do so.”

The block by MCMC comes on the heels of an announcement by Attorney-General (AG) Apandi Ali clearing Najib of all wrongdoing for having personally received RM2.6 billion from a Saudi donor and RM42 million from SRC International in 2013.

The AG had also ordered the MACC to cease investigations into the cases as both had been officially declared closed.
