KUALA LUMPUR:
Hindraf Makkal Sakthi has clarified that its’ earlier statement which made reference to Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah (ASWAJA), the official line in Malaysia on Islam, was not about taking sides in the differences among Muslims in matters of faith. “It was a passing reference in stressing that banned foreign preacher Zakir Naik was a common enemy of all right thinking people.”

Hindraf Chairman P. Waythamoorthy, a human rights advocate and senior lawyer in private practice, was commenting on Perkasa and Perlis Mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin criticising his earlier take on Zakir Naik. “Perkasa and Asri can’t be that incompetent that they cannot grasp the importance of our earlier statement.”

“Zaikir Naik is not only a foreigner, he’s among the 16 preachers banned by the government. He should not be allowed into the country. He’s not qualified to speak on Hinduism, or perhaps even Islam for that matter.”

Waytha, in reiterating that Zakir Naik should be deported immediately, pointed out that his presence in the country was a threat to national security since “nothing good will come out of his presence here”. “He preaches hate and sows discord among diferrent faiths and even within Islam. This is also against our national interest.”

“Our earlier statement has nothing to do with Hindraf being Hindu or Zakir Naik being Muslim. Perkasa and Asri should join us in demanding that he be deported immediately to preserve our existing harmony.”

The Hindraf Chief expressed surprise at Asri inviting his NGO for an “intellectual discourse” on ASWAJA. “How did this come about? The issue doesn’t arise.”

“The issue is Zakir Naik. We demand that he be deported immediately before he does further harm in the country.”

Waytha, in stating further the case against Zakir Naik alleged that the banned preacher advocated open defiance of the Federal Constitution on freedom of religion, the status of women and minority rights. “We have our sensitivities in this country. We can do without a foreigner running amok with his so-called comparative study on religions.”

“He should go and peddle his stuff in his own country and face the consequences there if he dares to do it.”

Waytha disclosed that he has since learnt that Zakir Naik was also a known al-Qaeda sympathiser. “This raises questions on alleged links to international terrorism.”

“We have laws in this country on such matters.”
