KUALA LUMPUR:
The Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal has retracted an invitation to former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife for the oath-taking ceremony of the new Yang di-Pertuan Agong next week.

Images of the letters, signed by the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, addressed to Mahathir and Dr Siti Hasmah Ali, are currently being shared on social media.

“This letter intends to prevent any embarrassment should Tun attend on the day as this office is not preparing any seat for Tun.

“I pray that you are in the best of health always,” read the letter.

The office of the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal confirmed to FMT that the invitations to Mahathir and Siti Hasmah have been rescinded.

The couple’s daughter, activist Marina Mahathir, also posted images of the letters on her Facebook page.

The Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Muhammad V, will take his oath as Malaysia’s 15th Agong on Dec 13.

He takes over the throne from the current ruler, the Sultan of Kedah, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, who will complete his five-year reign on Dec 12.
