PETALING JAYA: DAP member Daniel Low was literally in the line of fire during the chaos that broke out at Pakatan Harapan chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Nothing to Hide 2.0 forum yesterday.

Low was one of the forum’s 150 security personnel who ensured that those who attended the event left unscathed, despite the flares, chairs and punches thrown in the commotion which lasted for almost an hour.

Low himself, however, sustained a head injury which he only attended to once he was sure that everyone else was safe.

Relaying what had happened to him, Low told FMT that he was on standby not far from where Mahathir stood answering questions from those at the forum.

“Out of nowhere, I saw a bottle drop in front of me, then a shoe, followed by another bottle, another shoe, and right after, a chair.

“The other security members and I immediately moved to get everyone out of the hall. That’s when a flare suddenly landed right in front of me.

“There were old aunties and uncles around there and I was worried for them. So I pushed them out of the area before I tried to pick up the flare with my hands.”

The 30-year-old was then knocked down by a chair which hit his head. However, he continued trying to reach for the flare.

“Another chair dropped on my hand, and another landed on my back. I got up anyway, but saw more chairs coming my way, and at the direction of the flare.

“So I moved out of the way and continued getting people out of the hall.”

Low said he felt dizzy but pushed on with everyone’s best interests in mind.

“I felt the fear after the whole commotion was over. But during the commotion, in my mind, my job was to protect the attendees and make sure everyone was safe.”

He didn’t even realise his head was bleeding until his friends pointed it out to him when they were all outside the Dewan Raja Muda Musa.

But despite his head injury, he stayed on, working with others to get the forum’s VIPs to safety.

It was only after he had finished doing this that he called his employer, Damansara Utama state assemblywoman Yeo Bee Yin, who told him to lodge a police report at the district police headquarters.

PPBM Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, whose wing had organised the no-holds barred session with Mahathir, praised Low’s courage and selflessness at a press conference yesterday evening.

Syed Saddiq said despite the talk of racism, Low had put himself at risk just to get the predominantly Malay attendees out of harm’s way.

“They talk about racism, but this man who is from DAP didn’t run away when the commotion happened.

“He charged forward and protected the others,” Syed Saddiq had said.

Three teenagers aged 17 to 19 were detained following the fracas which erupted after Mahathir answered a participant’s question on the Memali incident.

The incident in question saw 14 villagers and four policemen killed in a confrontation between the police and an Islamic preacher in November 1985, in Kedah, when Mahathir was prime minister.
