LANGKAWI:
Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad will be contesting the Langkawi parliamentary seat in the coming polls, it was announced tonight.

The announcement by PKR and PH president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail at a ceramah in Padang Matsirat here was met with a rousing response from the crowd.

In the last polls, Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Nawawi Ahmad defeated PKR’s Ahmad Abdullah with a 11,861-vote majority.

Mahathir’s announcement puts an end to all speculation about where he would contest. He had previously named Langkawi alongside Putrajaya and Kubang Pasu, where he was the MP for more than three decades, including his 22-year tenure as prime minister.

PPBM deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir meanwhile will be contesting the Jerlun parliamentary seat and Jitra state seat.

Mahathir also announced that former Kedah opposition leader Amirudin Hamzah would be defending his Anak Bukit state seat and contesting the Kubang Pasu parliamentary seat.

Other notable figures contesting in Kedah this election include Wan Saiful Wan Jan, who will contest in Pendang, and Akramsyah Sanusi, the son of former Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Junid, who will contest in Jerai.
